- So... yeah. I’m ready, I think.
- Okay... can I begin?
- please let me begin my pitch.
- I'm really excited to be presenting my project here in Annecy.
- I'm super excited
Hi, and Bonjour,
🔴 I’m Baku Hashimoto, from tokyo, Japan.
I'm 🔴 an experimental filmmaker,
🔴 a generative artist,
🔴 and recently started researching Human-Computer Interaction,
🔴 And… today I’m here as an independent animation artist, taking on hand-drawing as a new challenge.
🔴List I’ve spent years making stop-motion animations and music videos.
🔴EYE In most of my projects, I start by developing tools,
🔴Depthcope such as software or shooting rigs.
🔴Milling So I’m kind of sitting in the middle— 🔴Ben-diagrambetween new media art and manual, frame-by-frame animation.
Alright, Alright, let me dive into my project.
🔴 It all started with a simple question:
“How can we expand the temporality of animation?”
🔴Zoetrope At the very beginning, animation was circular.
🔴Baby salmon And yes, the baby salmon
there’s no deep reason. I just like them. That’s it.
🔴Cinematograph But after the invention of cinema, timelines became strictly linear.
(DON'T PRESS!!!)
So I asked myself—what happens if we break that linearity
🔴 like this?
🔴 And then, what if we assigned little animations to each of those branches?
I tried that. Then I duplicated the animations using a kind of symmetry,
🔴 and turned the whole thing into something like a finite state machine.
🔴 Here's a test animation I made. 🔴 🔴Test Animation
🔴44 frames I'd like to mention that it only uses 44 hand-drawn frames.
🔴 But through spatial repetition and temporal non-linearity, this hypnotic, complex motion emerges.
And I found that surprisingly exciting.
🔴 This method kind of frees animation from fixed durations or conventional notions of framing.
It could even be interactive
🔴 or spatial—like an installation. There are lots of possibilities.
🔴 Still, I respect the short film format—even its linearity. So I also explored how to shape this method into a short film.
🔴 Here’s a super quick version:
🔴 In the void, something emerges. It divides, mutates, metamorphozes into everything including baby salmons, and dances in patterns.
Over time, these entities connect, condense, and reach a kind of equilibrium.
And from that state, a new kind of life is born.
🔴 I’m drawing from ideas like the Cyclic Universe Theory or
🔴 Computational Universe—which I find super inspiring.
🔴 So yeah, this project isn’t just about making a short animation.
It’s a kind of worldmaking. I want to create a space where motion itself has its own logic.
🔴 I’m looking for collaborators, and also support for funding or distribution.
If any of this sounds interesting, feel free to talk to me after this. Thanks for listening.
Or maybe I should say—merci boku.
