What is this site?
This is a digital garden that brings together my old WordPress portfolio and blog from my teenager, along with notes I’ve been writing over the past few years on Cosense and various social media.
I want to quote or link to this site
Feel free to quote or link within the bounds of fair use. Some pages carry a CC license, please follow that if applicable. No need to contact me. That said, if your mention isn’t overly critical, I’d be glad if you quietly let me know afterward ;)
This site contains both archival pages and scratchpad notes:
- Archival pages: I try to keep their URLs stable. They may include version histories of texts or BibTeX info for my solo- and co-authored papers — feel free to reference them.
- Scratchpad notes: Marked with a gray background and a
strikethroughon the site title in the top left. You’re welcome to quote or mention them, but their content and URLs may change on a whim.
How can I support your tool development?
Even a mention on social media is encouraging. Support through GitHub Sponsors is welcome as well.
I also welcome collaborations with companies and research institutions. Feel free to get in touch.

Other Miscellaneous Questions
These are things I’ve actually been asked, by friends, colleagues, and sometimes total strangers who just email me out of the blue.
Where does the “89” in your handle come from? Were you born in 1989?
It’s just a wordplay on my first name, Baku in Japanese. The “89” doesn’t refer to my birth year.
Where do you live?
I’m based in Tokyo, but I’m originally from Hokkaido in northern Japan. The climate here in Tokyo doesn’t really suit me, so I’ve been toying with the idea of splitting my time between two places, at least during the summer.
What’s the distinctive font you’re using?
- The heading typeface (for English text) is Gestures by Studio Moniker, a Dutch interactive design studio. Each character comes with quirky alternate characters.
- The monospace font is Fira Code, designed for programming. It includes ligatures that merge common symbol pairs. For example, typing “
>” and “=” together automatically renders as “>=”.
Tip: you can inspect fonts on any website with a tool like WhatFont.
