Even post 50+ years of computing, we are trapped in local optimas of GUIs where your average UI designer cargo cults and replicates current paradigmatic components and reasons in a nudge theory style: “why bother changing this when they are so familiar with it?”
The goto defaults in UI toolkits/APKs with their appeal to familiarity and unreasoned abandon is a real point of inertia/leverage which most startups — inspite of having the fire and earnest desire to transform the game — succumb to in the midst of quarterly bottomline chase.
Even if someone once in a blue moon surfaces and takes a shot to tinker with a small part, the conceptual integrity and consistency needed to work out the harmony of how these novel interactions might play together gets the squeeze when the guiding light is business incentives.
A way out in my mind is a deep dive of 8+ years where someone genuinely takes the time/space to gain the depth/breadth to figure out how we can reframe the mode of interacting with the computer. Otherwise it feels like it is a recurring story of regress to mean by Lindy effect.
