# Huawei Japan Lecture Series

In 2026 I gave a series of three talks for in-house CG researchers and product designers at Huawei Japan's research center. Each talk was given in Japanese with simultaneous interpretation in Mandarin and English. From the second session on, a guest artist joined, with my part serving as an opening act leading into their practice.

## Talks

- 2026

  - 2026/3/18 — [#1 Diverging from the Uncanny Valley](/diverging-from-uncanny-valley)
  - 2026/4/9 — _Translating Artistic Misuse into Visual Language_, a short talk at Huawei's Sakura Summit
  - 2026/6/12 — [#2 Post-Photorealism: Stylized CGI and Practical Shooting](/post-photorealism), with guest [Takafumi Matsunaga](/%E6%9D%BE%E6%B0%B8%E6%98%82%E5%8F%B2) (Tsuribu Tokyo)
  - 2026/10/9 — [#3 Expanded Photography and Friction](/expanded-photography-and-friction), with guest [Akihiko Taniguchi](/%E8%B0%B7%E5%8F%A3%E6%9A%81%E5%BD%A6) (_What does In-game Photography Capture?_)

The first talk looked at the wilderness beside the mainstream of photorealism in CG research: the expressions artists have found in misuse and artifacts. The second mapped commercial image-making after photorealism became a given, along two directions, stylized CGI and a return to practical shooting. The third turned to photography, tracing artists who deliberately bring friction and lag into their work even as more and more parameter decisions can be deferred until after the shot.
