# Permutation

## Teaser video (music by aus)

**Director / Animator / Programmer: Baku Hashimoto (橋本 麦)**

- Portfolio: <https://baku89.com>
- Contact: <mal@baku89.com>

> 6-mins Non-narrative Short film, Interactive Art, and Installation\
> Hand-Drawn + CGI + Generative Art\
> All Ages

Pitched at MIFA in Annecy Animation Festival 2025 – [“From Tradition to Vision: European and Japanese Artists in Residency”](https://programme.annecyfestival.com/programme/event/d12ad8f1-ad15-45a1-8942-582dbd56cd5c)

## What's the Project?

- A hand-drawn animation experiment exploring non-linear time structures.
- Combines ideas from generative systems (like cellular automata, agent-based simulation) with traditional frame-by-frame animation.

## Muti-media Adaptations

- Potentially **interactive** or spatial—could be adapted into **installations** at a gallery.
- Just imagine [Michael Frei](https://michaelfrei.io/)'s KIDS and Plug & Plug, or [Boris Labbé's Rhizome](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p71QzwtYyks) -- both could be good reference for this project.

## Looking for:

- _Producer_, who can support funding and distribution
- _Residency_, for further pre-production
- _Gallery_ that can exhbit my work in some spatial and immersive way
- _Animation co-director_, to help strengthen the hand-drawn animation and narrative aspects
- _Programmer_, in charge of developing the generative systems

## Logline

> In a lattice cosmos, a _Thing_ emerges — multiplying, mutating, and morphing into the myriad forms of existence. An infinite grid teems with life that dances, vanishes, and reconfigures, spiraling toward a phase transition. Patterns entwine, dissolve, and converge into a final state of thermal stillness. A hypnotic, non-narrative one-shot animation where hand-drawn animation and A-Life intertwine.

## About the Director

**Baku Hashimoto (橋本 麦)** is a Japanese experimental filmmaker, visual artist, and tool developer who works independently across a wide range of mediums—from generative art and motion graphics to stop-motion animation and interactive design. Influenced by experimental film and hacker culture, he explores new ways of creating through both visual experimentation and technical innovation. By continually researching tool development and diverse modes of expression, he pursues a variety of styles within the visual arts.
